Our picks in detail

What each steam cleaner does well, and who should skip it

Specifications are each brand’s own, and notes draw on independent reviews, manuals and extension guidance. We have not tested or used these steam cleaners ourselves. How we pick.

Best handheld overall#1

McCulloch MC1230

This is the small steamer to buy if your jobs are sinks, oven racks, grill grates and bathroom tile. A Quartz summary of Consumer Reports testing names it CR’s top overall handheld, saying its concentrated steam melted grease off oven racks and it was one of two models to fully clean a stubborn sink basin. The price sits at the top of our Budget tier.

Why it stands out

  • Steam comes on demand from a trigger with a lock, so your finger can rest on longer jobs.
  • McCulloch includes an extension hose, 11 attachments and a carry bag, so there is little to buy later.
  • A 15 ft cord and 900 W heater; McCulloch quotes 3 minutes to heat.
TypeHandheld
Tank6 oz
Heat-up3 minutes
Run per fill8–10 minutes (brand lists both)
Steam & reachExtension hose, 11 attachments; 15 ft cord

Good fit if

  • You want one compact steamer for kitchen and bathroom spot jobs.
  • You want a hose and brushes in the box.
  • You can work in short sessions and let it reheat.

Skip it if

  • You plan long sessions: the same Quartz summary says it paused to reheat more often than rivals.
  • You want to steam clothes: there is no fabric attachment.

McCulloch’s own figures disagree in places: 8 or 10 minutes of run time, and 1 or 2 years of warranty, depending on the document. Check the warranty on the listing you buy. We found no CPSC recall for McCulloch steam cleaners, which is not a guarantee of safety.

Best for grout#2

Vapamore MR-75 Amico

NBC Select names the MR-75 best for grout, citing a cleaning professional who calls it a favorite at his company. It costs more than the budget handhelds, and what the extra pays for is the kit: a dedicated grout brush, metal brushes and a stated pressure figure.

Why it stands out

  • Vapamore states 43.5 psi and 200–210°F steam output, which few handheld makers publish.
  • The box holds four nylon brushes including a grout brush, two brass brushes, a stainless steel brush, a fabric tool and a carrying case.
  • A 3 ft steam hose reaches tight spots, and Automoblog rates it its best handheld for cars.
TypeHandheld with hose
Tank6.7 fl oz
Heat-up4 minutes
Run per fillNot published
Steam & reach43.5 psi; 3 ft hose; 10 ft cord

Good fit if

  • Grout and tile lines are your main job.
  • You want metal brushes included for hard, heat-safe surfaces.
  • You clean a car interior and want a hose for tight spots.

Skip it if

  • You want the lowest price; the budget handhelds here cost much less.
  • You want to lock the steam on: Automoblog lists the missing trigger lock as a drawback.
Best budget handheld#3

Dirt Devil 7-in-1 Handheld Steamer

Family Handyman calls this its best budget pick and a casual steamer for occasional use, after running 10 steamers through five cleaning tests. It is cheap and has a generous cord, but be realistic: the same review calls its cleaning performance inconsistent.

Why it stands out

  • An 8.5 oz tank, larger than most of the handhelds on this page.
  • A 16.4 ft cord and 22.5 in reach, per Dirt Devil.
  • Quartz’s CR summary says its fabric tool smoothed a wrinkled blouse faster than the Worx.
TypeHandheld
Tank8.5 oz
Heat-upAbout 2–3 minutes

Steam & reach22.5 in reach; 16.4 ft cord

Good fit if

  • You steam now and then and do not want to spend much.
  • Light fabric refreshing and curtains are part of the job.

Skip it if

  • You need strong, consistent grime removal: Family Handyman saw coffee residue left on upholstery.
  • You want a floor attachment; there is none.
Best cordless#4

Worx 20V SteamStorm (WX770L)

The one to look at if there is no outlet where you are cleaning. Quartz’s summary of Consumer Reports testing names it CR’s cordless pick for outdoor and car cleaning. It heats in seconds, weighs little, and gives up power and tank size to get there.

Why it stands out

  • Worx quotes 8 seconds to heat, about 20 on first use or after a long idle.
  • 2.8 lb with the battery, and about 16 minutes per 4.0Ah battery charge.
  • Brushes, grout tool, angle concentrator and fabric tool included.
TypeCordless handheld
Tank4.1 fl oz
Heat-up8 seconds (about 20 on first use)
Run per fillAbout 16 minutes (4.0Ah battery)
Steam & reach220°F (brand); 2.8 lb with battery

Good fit if

  • You clean cars, patios or sheds away from outlets.
  • You want near-instant steam for quick jobs.
  • You already use Worx 20V tools (the bare tool is sold separately).

Skip it if

  • You face tough grime: the Quartz summary says it felt less powerful than the McCulloch or Dupray.
  • You dislike refilling: 4.1 oz is the smallest tank here, and the same summary reports leaks.
Best for the whole home#5

Dupray Neat Plus

The Neat Plus fixes the two things that slow a canister down: it heats in 1–2 minutes rather than about 8, and you can refill it while you work rather than waiting for a boiler to cool. Apartment Therapy’s hands-on review says it removed caked-on grime from stone floors and grout and refreshed mattresses, pillows and a couch.

Why it stands out

  • Dupray lists up to 275°F steam and a 54 oz unpressurized tank.
  • A 17-piece kit, a 6 ft 6 in hose and a 16 ft cord in an 11 lb machine.
  • It is a different design from the original Neat, the model named in the CPSC recall.
TypeCanister
Tank54 oz, refill any time
Heat-up1–2 minutes
Run per fillUnlimited with refills
Steam & reachUp to 275°F; 6 ft 6 in hose; 16 ft cord

Good fit if

  • You want one machine for floors, grout, upholstery and mattresses.
  • You clean several rooms in a session and hate waiting for a refill.

Skip it if

  • You want a steam-strength dial: Apartment Therapy describes a single power button.
  • You only do quick floor touch-ups, where a 2-in-1 mop is less to haul around.

Let it heat fully: Apartment Therapy says it spits water if used early. On upholstery the same reviewer says results are harder to see than on hard surfaces. Dupray lists no pressure figure, so you cannot compare it with rivals on psi.

Best long-running canister#6

McCulloch MC1375

The classic pressurized canister: long run time, adjustable steam and a lot of attachments. CBS Essentials has named it best overall, and Bob Vila listed it first for bed bugs. You pay in waiting, since it takes about 10–12 minutes to heat and has to cool before you can refill.

Why it stands out

  • 90 minutes of continuous steam from a 48 oz tank, per McCulloch.
  • Variable steam up to 58 psi, so you can dial up for grease and down for fabric.
  • 20 accessories, a 7 ft insulated hose and an 18 ft cord.
TypeCanister
Tank48 oz
Heat-up10–12 minutes
Run per fill90 minutes
Steam & reachUp to 58 psi, variable; 7 ft hose; 18 ft cord

Good fit if

  • You want long sessions and adjustable steam.
  • You clean a mix of kitchens, bathrooms and tile floors.

Skip it if

  • You hate waiting: heat-up and cool-down both take real time.
  • You want to refill mid-job; do not open the cap while it is hot or pressurized.

Some replacement parts showed as out of stock on the brand site when we checked. Review coverage is older than for the Dupray models.

Best 2-in-1 mop and handheld#7

Bissell PowerFresh Pet Lift-Off

A steam mop with a pod that lifts off for grout, windows and fabric. GearLab makes it an Editors’ Choice for full-home scrubbing, and Bob Vila names it best overall in its upholstery steam cleaner test. It is ready in 30 seconds, and it is not a stain remover: chocolate and tomato sauce stayed in Bob Vila’s test.

Why it stands out

  • Steam in 30 seconds, per Bissell’s guide, with High and Low settings.
  • 13 tools, including a grout tool, fabric steamer, squeegee and scraper.
  • A 25 ft cord for moving between rooms.
TypeSteam mop with lift-off pod
Tank13.5 oz
Heat-up30 seconds
Run per fillNot published
Steam & reachHigh/Low steam; 25 ft cord; 13 tools

Good fit if

  • Sealed hard floors are the main job, with occasional grout and fabric.
  • You want steam in under a minute.

Skip it if

  • You have wood floors: the National Wood Flooring Association says no steam mops on wood.
  • You want deep upholstery cleaning; it left food stains behind in testing.

This is a different product from the recalled Steam Shot handhelds. The tank is small: one Apartment Therapy reviewer got about 23 minutes from a fill.

Not sure where to start?

If your jobs are sinks, grills and shower tile, a handheld is enough. The McCulloch MC1230 comes with a hose and 11 attachments. Tank size, attachments and what’s in the box are on the product page.

How to choose

Five things that matter more than the brand

Most bad steam cleaner purchases come from buying the wrong class of machine for the job, or steaming a surface that should not be steamed.

01

Match the machine to the job

HGTV calls a canister the best choice for typical homes and says handhelds suit small spot-cleaning jobs. If your jobs are a sink, a grill and some shower tile, a handheld is plenty. If you want to do every floor, it is not.

02

Expect short sessions from a handheld

Bob Vila says 6 to 8 ounce tanks can run out in a few minutes, and reports 8 to 12 minutes for one pressurized model. A bigger tank means a heavier unit in your hand, so this is a real trade-off.

03

Check how refilling works

Most pressurized machines must cool before the cap comes off. McCulloch allows 5 to 10 minutes on its canister and says to press the steam button to release pressure. Unpressurized designs such as the Neat Plus refill while you work.

04

Check the recall record

CPSC recalled Bissell Steam Shot, Dupray Neat and Wagner 900 Series machines in recent years, all over burn or injury hazards. Look up the model on cpsc.gov before you buy secondhand or from a third-party seller.

05

Know what you will be steaming

The National Wood Flooring Association says no steam on wood floors, and manuals rule out wax finishes, velvet and leather. Steam works best on sealed, heat-tolerant surfaces. Bissell says cleaning power drops once the nozzle is more than 3 inches away.

FAQ

Steam cleaners: questions answered

Straight answers to the questions people ask before buying, drawn from extension guides, government sources, manuals and independent reviews. Where sources disagree, we say so.

Do handheld steam cleaners work?5

Do handheld steam cleaners really work?

Yes, for small jobs on heat-tolerant surfaces. A Quartz summary of Consumer Reports testing says the McCulloch MC1230 melted grease off oven racks and fully cleaned a stubborn sink basin. Limits are real, though: small tanks mean short sessions, and Family Handyman found its budget pick inconsistent. Expect a good spot cleaner, not a whole-house machine.

Are handheld steam cleaners worth it?

They are worth it if you have recurring small jobs such as grout lines, grills, sinks or car vents. This Old House calls them compact and budget-friendly for small jobs. They are poor value if you want to clean every floor: Bob Vila says 6 to 8 ounce tanks can run out in a few minutes, so you would spend the day refilling.

What can you clean with a handheld steam cleaner?

Sealed, heat-tolerant hard surfaces are the best fit: glazed tile, sinks, faucets, oven racks, grill grates and glass, warmed gently first. With a fabric tool, some models also refresh W-coded upholstery. Manuals rule out wax finishes, unsealed wood, velvet and leather, and Bob Vila says to keep steam away from electronics and outlets.

How hot does a steam cleaner get?

At sea level, water becomes steam at 212°F, and pressure raises that: TLV’s steam tables list about 298°F at 50 psig. What reaches the surface is cooler. Which? says steam cools quickly in the air, and a study of a commercial steamer measured surfaces at about 153–165°F right after a pass. Brand temperature figures are not a measurement at your grout line.

Do steam cleaners use soap or chemicals?

Usually not. Bissell says to use water only, with no chemicals or additives, and a Bissell manager told Consumer Reports that chemicals can build up on the boiler and could void the warranty. Steam loosens dirt rather than carrying it away, so Angi says you still need to wipe or vacuum afterward. Commercial machines like the Dupray Hill Injection add a separate detergent tank.

Mostly spot jobs? Our top handheld has a hose and brushes in the box.See what’s in the box
Choosing a type5

Handheld, canister or steam mop: which should I buy?

Buy for the size of the job. This Old House says handhelds run about 10 to 20 minutes and suit small jobs, canisters take about 10 minutes to heat and run at least 45 minutes, and steam mops run 15 to 20 minutes. HGTV calls a canister the best choice for typical homes. A 2-in-1 mop with a detachable handheld is the compromise if floors come first.

What size tank do I need?

It depends on how long you want to work between refills. Handhelds on this site hold 4.1 to about 9.5 ounces, and brands quote 8 to 16 minutes of steam where they state a figure. Canisters hold 48 to 64 ounces and McCulloch quotes up to 120 minutes. Bob Vila warns a larger handheld tank means a much heavier unit in your hand.

Is there a cordless handheld steam cleaner?

Yes, though cordless models are rare. The Worx 20V SteamStorm runs on a battery, and a Quartz summary names it Consumer Reports’ cordless pick for outdoor and car cleaning. It has a 4.1 oz tank and about 16 minutes per 4.0Ah battery charge, per Worx. The same summary says it felt less powerful than corded McCulloch and Dupray models and leaked during use.

How much pressure do I need?

Less than the marketing suggests. Retailer Sylvane says most steam cleaners run at 50 to 60 PSI, and many handheld makers publish no figure at all. Wagner’s own numbers conflict on one model: 55 PSI on the page, 36–43 in the manual. For bed bugs, more can be worse, because University of Minnesota Extension warns strong jets can blow bugs away.

How much do steam cleaners cost?

Budget handhelds on this site sit under $75, and most canisters and 2-in-1 mops fall between $75 and $200. Premium canisters run above that, and commercial machines far above it. This Old House says canisters typically cost $100 to $200 and steam mops $50 to $150. We show price tiers rather than exact prices because prices move.

Safety and recalls5

Which steam cleaners have been recalled?

CPSC’s recent recalls include Bissell Steam Shot OmniReach and Omni (2026, about 1.7 million units), Bissell Steam Shot 39N7 and 2994 (2024, about 3.2 million), Dupray Neat (2026, about 651,000), Wagner 905e, 915e and 925e (2026, about 700,000) and CasaClean DF-958 (2025). Hazards were burns or injury, and remedies vary. We do not recommend the Bissell Steam Shot or Wagner 900 Series models on this site.

Are steam cleaners safe?

They are safe enough with care, but they are real burn hazards. Healthline, citing research on pig skin, says steam can burn lower skin layers while the surface looks less damaged. Follow the manual, keep children away, never aim at people or pets, and point the nozzle at a towel on startup: University of Minnesota Extension says steamers can spit hot water.

How do I refill a steam cleaner safely?

Unplug it, let it cool, and release the pressure before you open the cap. Bissell says to wait 5 minutes, and McCulloch allows 5 to 10 minutes and says to press the steam button to release what remains. Do not overfill: Bissell says that removes the air space the machine needs, so hot water can leak or shoot from the nozzle. Use the measuring cup.

Should I use distilled water?

Use it if your manual asks, and most do. Bissell, McCulloch and Dupray recommend distilled or demineralized water, and a Consumer Reports test engineer says minerals in tap water build up on the heating coil. HGTV says tap water is acceptable, and Kärcher’s US page promotes tap water. Hard water makes the case for distilled stronger.

Can I put vinegar in a steam cleaner?

Only if your manual says so. McCulloch’s canister manual allows a descaling mix of 8 oz vinegar and 8 oz water if you have not been using distilled water. Dupray warns that household descaling products can cause harmful fumes, damage or injury and says to use only clean water. Kärcher specifies its own decalcifying agent. The instructions differ, so follow your own machine’s.

Want a canister we found no CPSC recall for? See what owners report. What owners say
Germs, sanitizing and mold5

Do steam cleaners kill germs?

They can under controlled conditions, but do not rely on one to disinfect your home. Lab reports behind brand claims hold the nozzle right over smooth surfaces for 30 to 45 seconds. Consumer Reports concludes steam mops are not really worth using for disinfecting and recommends an EPA-registered disinfectant or diluted bleach. Which? says it does not test germ-killing in its assessments.

What does a 99.9% claim on a steam cleaner mean?

It is usually a brand’s result for named organisms under set lab conditions. Bissell’s footnote specifies non-porous, non-food contact surfaces, the accessory nozzle and 45 seconds directly above the surface. Kärcher specifies 30 seconds in direct contact on smooth hard surfaces. Bissell adds that results may vary. Moving the nozzle quickly across a counter is not that test.

Is a steam cleaner EPA-approved if it has an EPA number?

No. EPA says a pesticide device label carries an Establishment Number that identifies the production site, and that number does not mean EPA reviewed the product’s safety or efficacy or endorsed it. EPA also says device makers generally do not submit efficacy data. We found no EPA statement naming steam cleaners specifically, so treat any such badge with care.

Does steam kill mold in grout?

We could not find independent evidence that it does, and claims we saw came from sellers. EPA’s advice is that moisture control is the key to mold control: fix the water problem, scrub hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely. EPA adds that mold in porous materials may be difficult or impossible to remove fully, and grout is porous.

Can steam help with dust mites and allergens?

Some older research points that way. A University of Glasgow study found no live mites in steam-treated carpet squares over four months and an 86.7% mean fall in a mite allergen, using a domestic steam cleaner on carpet. An NIEHS-led study of 39 homes found dry steam plus vacuuming lasted longer than one vacuuming on upholstered furniture. Neither tested a small handheld.

Fabric is the job? See a machine known for drier steam.Read buyer reviews
Grout, tile and floors5

Does steam cleaning damage grout?

Sources disagree, and sound grout is usually fine. The Tile Council of North America suggests pressurized steam for stains that resist conventional cleaners, and MAPEI calls steam generally safe, while warning prolonged high heat can harm some pre-mixed grouts. Consumer Reports says hot water could damage grout, so limit how often you steam-mop tile. Hunker says never to steam grout that is already damaged.

Does steam remove grout sealer?

We could not find a sealer maker or trade group that answers this, so we will not claim either way. One home editorial site, Oh So Spotless, advises resealing once grout has fully dried after a deep steam clean. If your grout is sealed, check with the sealer maker. Tile Council of North America notes that many owners seal cement grout because it is porous.

Can I use a steam cleaner on hardwood floors?

We would not. The National Wood Flooring Association says no steam mops on wood floors because they damage the finish and the wood over time, and Consumer Reports extends that to engineered wood and bamboo. Mohawk, AHF/Bruce and Bona agree. Dupray and McCulloch do list sealed hardwood, so the manuals disagree with the flooring industry. Your floor warranty should settle it.

Can I steam laminate or vinyl plank floors?

Check the floor maker first. Shaw says never to steam its laminate because plank joints are not waterproof, and also says no steam on resilient vinyl. A flooring expert told Consumer Reports the majority of vinyl is safe, while McCulloch lists sealed laminate as suitable. This Old House says some newer laminates are rated for steam. Warranty terms should decide.

Is steam safe on marble and natural stone?

Sources conflict, so test carefully or skip it. Homes & Gardens says heat and moisture can cause spalling in marble, granite and limestone, and HGTV and Bob Vila list marble as one to avoid. McCulloch’s manual lists stone, slate, marble and granite as suitable. We found no statement from the Natural Stone Institute on steam, so ask whoever installed the stone.

Grout lines are the main job? Our pick comes with a grout brush.Check attachments & specs
Couches, mattresses and carpet5

Can you steam clean a couch?

Yes, if the fabric code allows water. Furniture maker American Leather says W means water-based cleaning is safe, S means never water, WS means either, and X means professional cleaning only. Rainbow Restoration says W fabric can take an upholstery steam cleaner. Test a hidden spot, avoid over-wetting, and use fans: Angi says drying commonly takes about 2 to 8 hours.

Will steam remove couch stains?

Do not count on it. In Bob Vila’s upholstery test, no cleaner removed a vegetable oil stain, and its best overall pick left chocolate and tomato sauce behind. Testers found steam output was the biggest factor in stain removal. Steam is better at refreshing fabric and loosening surface grime, and Angi says the surface still needs vacuuming or wiping afterward.

Can you steam clean a mattress?

Most mattresses can take it lightly, but memory foam is the exception to check. Bissell, Dupray and NPIC list mattresses as steam targets, while Tom’s Guide says to avoid steam on memory foam and warns it risks the warranty. Tempur-Pedic says its mattress should never become wet. Use a fabric tool, keep moving, and let the mattress dry fully.

Does steam remove pet urine smell?

It usually will not, and it may make things worse. The Humane Society of Sonoma County says to avoid steam on urine odors because heat sets the stain and odor. Angi says an enzymatic cleaner is usually needed. Retailer Sylvane says steam can deodorize pet beds and furniture, but that is a seller’s view, so try an enzymatic cleaner first.

Is a steam cleaner the same as a carpet cleaner?

No. Tom’s Guide says carpet cleaners spray water and solution into fibers and pull the dirty liquid back out, while steam cleaners use heat without detergent and suit hard surfaces. Bob Vila says steam cleaners lack suction and can leave carpet wet. Dupray itself says its machines are spot cleaners, not wall-to-wall extractors. For dirty carpet, rent or buy an extractor.

Fabric and floors both? See our whole-home pick.See full specs
Bed bugs and cars5

Does steam kill bed bugs?

Yes, on contact, but it will not clear an infestation alone. In a study using a commercial steamer, adult mortality was 88 to 94% and all treated eggs died. Virginia Cooperative Extension says steam alone will not eliminate bed bugs, and University of Kentucky says it leaves no residual protection. University of Minnesota says the most effective approach is a pest professional.

Will a small handheld steamer work on bed bugs?

We found no extension or peer-reviewed test of small pressurized handhelds, so we cannot say. University of Minnesota advises a commercial steamer of at least 1 gallon and warns against pinpoint nozzles. Purdue says most retail steamers do not get hot enough. Rutgers is more relaxed, citing a study where consumer and professional steamers both killed bed bugs.

How slowly should I steam for bed bugs?

Slowly, and guides vary on the exact pace. Purdue and Penn State say about 1 foot every 10 to 15 seconds, Indiana’s health department says 20 seconds, and Virginia Tech says 30. University of Minnesota says to check the surface with an infrared thermometer and aim for 160–180°F. Avoid brushes and pinpoint jets, which can scatter bugs.

Is a steam cleaner safe for a car interior?

It suits many fabrics and hard trim, but not everything. YourMechanic recommends steam for fabric seats, carpets and vents. A steamer seller told Professional Carwashing & Detailing to avoid radios, speakers, dash displays and exposed electrical parts. We found no guidance on airbag covers, so keep steam away from them and check your owner’s manual.

Can I steam a car headliner?

It is risky, and adhesive failure is the concern. YourMechanic allows a microfiber-covered flat tip moved faster than on seats, and warns softened glue can let the headliner hang down. Detailer Ian Howard says to keep the heat moderate. Jimbo’s Detailing, which sells interior cleaners, says it is not worth it for routine cleaning. If you do try, use very little steam.

How we pick

How this guide is put together

  • We compare each brand’s published specifications: tank size, heat-up, run time, temperature, pressure, hose and cord length, and attachments.
  • We read independent reviews, university extension and government guidance, owner manuals and trade groups.
  • We check CPSC recall records and say so when a model is affected.
  • We have not tested or used these machines ourselves, and we do not accept free products or payment for placement.

What steam can and cannot do

Steam loosens grime on heat-tolerant surfaces, and it still needs wiping away. It does not lift set-in stains reliably, replace an extractor on carpet, or clear a bed bug infestation by itself. It can also burn you and damage some surfaces, so read the manual first.
